Birth to Three MattersA Healthy Child

The Birth to Three Matters document published by Sure Start provides those working with babies and toddlers with a framework, not a curriculum.  Working with this age group requires lots of energy and creativity and with a busy, often full-time role involved with the children, practitioners are constantly looking for ideas they can “gather and go with“.  The ideas that are offered in this manual are designed with this in mind. Practitioners need to be able to understand and call upon child development theories and apply it to practical everyday play in order to give children the very best possible start in life.

A Healthy Child (0-3s) Val Sabin manual

Birth to Three MattersA Healthy Child forms a quarter of the framework in Birth to Three Matters issued by Sure Start for use in Early Year’s settings. The Val Sabin manual has been written to support practitioners who work with babies and toddlers. It will expand and support the concepts and requirements expressed in the Birth to Three Matters framework through the four components; Emotional Well being, Growing and Developing, Keeping Safe, and Healthy Choices.

The manual comprises 160 fun activities based on expert knowledge of this age group and of physical development. The CD provides 28 tracks of music to use with practical movement exercises.  The key areas of focus are babies’ and toddlers’ gross and fine motor skills within everyday play activities.

Birth to Three MattersThe manual recognises the four broad stages in the Birth to three documents and develops appropriate activities for linking into them.  This supports the practitioner and reinforces their knowledge of Birth to Three Matters. The day care standards must be adhered to at all times and these are also integrated into the course.

This manual will provide a useful start for settings beginning to address “Every Child Matters” - Be Healthy – it will also help them to review practice for any Ofsted Inspection with reference to self assessing their effectiveness in supporting children to be healthy.
